Many people do not realise that there is a large and very lucrative market for 'real' people to enjoy a successful career in modelling. Some modelling jobs require models with an everyday look, such as a mechanic, schoolteacher, shop assistant, grandmother, and so on.
Unlike many other types of modelling, character models are not restricted by height, weight, body shape or age. Real models supply the commercial industry with faces that are not traditionally beautiful to front their campaigns, providing advertisers with everyday, relatable talent. The scope for possible work is wide, but because nearly anyone can work as a real model, the competition is great and therefore a great personality and good work ethic is a must. A real model will most likely work as an extra in films or TV, commercials or promotions.

How do I maintain a healthy body and mind in a highly competitive industry?
It is a challenge to keep this balance when it seems you are being judged by others all the time. Try to find some balance in your life by keeping in touch with friends who are not in the 'industry', and spending time on other activities. Having interests outside of modelling will help too. Being self critical, judging yourself harshly, or paying too much attention to the opinions of others can all get you down. Think about how you could help be positive towards other people- giving them compliments, or encouragement because what goes around comes around too.
