Freelance modelling is when a model is not signed up to a modelling agency. A freelance model will market his or herself in the industry and find modelling work independently. Many freelance models work as part time models to earn a second income.
A freelance model can source their own work through modelling communities, networking events and contacting companies and clients directly. With the internet and social networking sites at your fingertips, marketing yourself has never been easier. Many models have taken it upon themselves to get work independent of agencies, giving them full control of their earnings and career. When working as a freelance or part-time model, it is imperative to maintain your own list of contacts as you do not have a model agent to do this for you, so it is beneficial to keep in contact with the photographers and other industry creatives that you work with on each shoot or at each event.
It is very important to be cautious as a freelance model. Always check the credentials or references of a photographer and be wary of attending castings that are advertised online or in the newspaper. There are many people who prey on young, naive models, so make sure that someone knows where you are at all times. See our Safety Tips for more information.
There are no constraints in freelance modelling. The work tends to vary and is dependent on what the photographer or employer has in mind. Therefore, freelance models come in all shapes and sizes, often have different types of looks, and can vary in age.
Model Advice provides a variety of advisory and support services to freelance models which will help to sustain a model in their career. Contact Model Advice in order to learn more about our services and how they can help you in a freelance modelling career.

I always hear about needing to be 'Size 0' to model but I don't really understand what that means. I am a size 10/12 – am I too fat to model?
Size 0 is just a bit of lazy journalism. It is an American dress size that corresponds to a UK size 4. Size and fat are not the same thing. You can be size 16 and still be honed, in proportion for your body and absolutely gorgeous.
