Carey Mulligan refused Wintour advice

Carey Mulligan refused Wintour adviceCarey Mulligan won’t take fashion advice from Anna Wintour.

The 24-year-old star admits the formidable US Vogue editor advised her to wear a short dress to the Oscars ceremony next month (07.03.10), but she ignored her style tip.

She said: ‘Anna said I should wear short for the Oscars. I was like, ‘No that is so not what I had in my head when I was six years old!’ ‘

Carey, who has been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role in ‘An Education’, claims she has yet to plan anything for the event.

She told people.com: ‘It’s beyond wild. I haven’t got a dress or speech planned. I haven’t got any of that stuff yet.

‘It’s beyond crazy to be up against Meryl Streep. She is the best actor on the planet. So it is really hard not to be overawed. Meryl Streep is the queen!’

Discussing her appearance at the nominees luncheon, where she met all the other actresses vying for the prize – including Meryl, Sandra Bullock, Gabourey Sidibe and Helen Mirren – Carey says it felt like confirmation it was real.

She said: ‘You’re made to stand on this bank with all the other nominees like graduation, and are called up one by one to get your certificate. You just go, ‘Wow. I’ve actually got some written proof that this has happened!’ ‘

Alexa Ray Joel’s Prell role

Alexa Ray JoelAlexa Ray Joel has been named as the new face of Prell.

The 24-year-old star – daughter of ‘Piano Man’ singer Billy Joel and supermodel Christine Brinkley – will front a new campaign for the US hair care brand, following in the footsteps of her famous mother.

Alexa said: ‘I am so excited and honoured to be named the new face of Prell – especially following in the footsteps of my mother.’

The campaign will launch in the US later this year and will feature Alexa’s music.

Christine fronted the campaign in the 80s, shortly after she married Billy, who she is now divorced from.

The news comes two months after Alexa was taken to a New York hospital after reportedly taking a possible overdose of pills.

Following her release Alexa gave thanks to ‘everyone for their outpouring of love and support’.

Last August, she described herself on her MySpace page as ‘forgotten’.

She also revealed she hated dating and considered herself ‘terrible’ at it.

Alexa – who split up from boyfriend Jimmy Riot twice in 2008 – wrote: ‘I HATE the game-playing! Can’t stand it.’

Kimberly Wyatt dyed her hair brown

Kimberly WyattKimberly Wyatt dyed her hair brown after having her wisdom teeth taken out.

The singer – who found fame with the Pussycat Dolls – decided to have a complete image overhaul at the beginning of the year following a painful operation.

Talking about her former blonde locks, Kimberly said: ‘I had quite a new year. I had to get my wisdom teeth pulled out and I was in so much pain. Then I decided to change my diet to a more organic one. Any toxins I put in or on my body makes me react in a crazy way – my scalp was smelling, my skin was bad – so I decided to make a change. It was a new year, new me!’

Kimberly also revealed she tries to incorporate her ‘punk-rock’ side into her everyday style.

She said: ‘I’d say I have a real punk-rock edge. So no matter how girlie I go, I try and incorporate things that stay true to my punk-rock side. So even if I’m wearing a flowy feminine dress, I’d throw a motorcycle jacket on and rock it out with hoop earrings, bangles and rings and things.’

Although she wears a lot of skimpy outfits on stage, Kimberly admits she’s not always happy with her looks.

She told new! magazine: ‘I’m like any girl. I wake up sometimes and don’t feel good about myself. I always nit-pick about things and sometimes I just have to look in the mirror and build myself up, and tell myself, ‘You know what? You’re fine! Stop putting yourself down. Be happy with what you have and just go out there and flaunt it.’ ‘

Elle Macpherson’s flattering underwear

Elle MacphersonElle Macpherson wants her lingerie to flatter every body shape.

The Australian supermodel – who has her own range of underwear, Elle Macpherson Intimates – accepts that women come in all different shapes and knows how important it is to have a good-fitting bra and knickers.

She said: ‘I’m conscious when I’m designing lingerie of the need to create for all different types of women, so that my designs enhance the proportions of a woman’s body. Most women want to make their hips look narrower and their breasts look bigger.’

The 46-year-old beauty – nicknamed ‘The Body’ – says she and her team spend a lot of time thinking about different body shapes and draws inspiration from her own experiences.

The mother-of-two told Fabulous magazine: ‘We create bras for all body types and cup sizes. I’ve just launched a range of D-G cups and it’s phenomenally successful. We also created a maternity line because I couldn’t find anything pretty, comfortable and practical on the market when I was breastfeeding my sons.’

Jo Wood’s DIY eyelashes

Jo WoodJo Wood used to draw on her own eyelashes.

The 54-year-old star – ex-wife of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood – admits she was such a huge fan of 60s model Twiggy she would do anything to look like her.

She said: ‘When I was a teen, Twiggy was my beauty inspiration – I even drew on eyelashes.’

Jo has her own range of cosmetics and skincare products – Jo Wood Organics – and is constantly testing out products.

She told Style magazine: ‘For my fragrance, I love the citrusy smell of Eau Sauvage by Dior; it reminds me of going out in my 20s. Making beauty products myself means I’m always trying out other organic brands, but mascara and lipstick are the only things I don’t buy organic. I have to use Mac Zoom lash and I love MAC lipsticks, the paler the better.’

Jo has previously revealed she was inspired to work on her collection after meeting a herbalist.

She said: ‘I was put on steroids for a perforated appendix. They were b****y awful! Then I met a herbalist who completely changed my life. And everything became organic – I was like, obsessed!

‘My brother gave me this book which tells you how to make organic face oil and so on, and I turned my bathroom into a lab and got all these little brown bottles and funnels and then gave the oils to my girlfriends.’

Jenny Packham’s Fashion Week excitement

Jenny PackhamJenny Packham can’t wait to showcase her latest collection at London Fashion Week.

The fashion designer says the event is one of the highlights of her year and gets a huge buzz when the models are about to walk down the runway in her designs.

She said: ‘I love LFW. The catwalk is the high point of the season and so much creativity comes together. My favourite moment is when the models are lined up backstage in their first outfits. The music starts to play and the adrenalin flows. There is nothing more you can do and for a few minutes everything is perfect.’

Jenny says those lucky enough to get a seat will be in for a treat.

She said: ‘We are collaborating with the artist Anthony Burrill again this season. He has designed the set, invites and introduced us to the band Acid Washed who have composed the music for the show. It should be super cool, glamorous, very shiny and slick. Colours are electric and unrelenting.’

Following the show, Jenny is looking forward to relaxing for a few days in Paris.

She told vogue.com: ‘Eventually I make it to a nearby bar where we all watch the show and try to relax. Then I have a few days at home or in Paris to unwind and then we start the next season.’

She will show her autumn/winter 2010-11 collection tomorrow (23.02.10).

Vivienne Westwood’s shopping plea

Vivienne WestwoodDame Vivienne Westwood wants people to stop shopping.

The eccentric British designer, famed for her bright orange hair and colourful clothing, believes people should refrain from buying clothes to avoid over-consumption.

She said: ‘I just tell people, stop buying clothes. Why not protect this gift of life while we have it?

‘I don’t take the attitude that destruction is inevitable. Some of us would like to stop that and help people survive.’

The 68-year-old fashionista often uses her catwalk collections to make a statement – in 2005 she launched a range of T-shirts and baby clothes emblazoned with the phrase ‘I AM NOT A TERRORIST, please don’t arrest me’.

Despite many people suggesting she cannot work in fashion and be against consumerism, Vivienne has claimed in the past it is a subject that sits difficultly for her.

She said: ‘I don’t feel very comfortable defending my fashion except to say that people don’t have to buy it. But if you’ve got the money to afford them, then buy something from me. Just don’t buy too much.’

Cheryl Cole ‘can’t forgive’ Ashley

Cheryl Cole Cheryl Cole won’t forgive her husband Ashley.

The ‘Fight For This Love’ hitmaker has vowed to return from a break in Los Angeles with her mind made up about what she will do with her marriage to soccer star Ashley Cole – which has been rocked by allegations of cheating with a number of women.

According to Britain’s Sunday Mirror, a source close to Cheryl said: ‘She is very upset and said she is going through hell at the moment.

‘Her emotions are all over the place and she been veering between bouts of crying and anger as she tries to work out what to do.

‘She is very confused and, in one of her low points, she said to me, ‘I can’t forgive him this time’.

‘She is using her week in Los Angeles as decision time while she’s away from all other distractions.’

While Cheryl is in the US she has been spending time with hunky dancer Derek Hough.

The pair have been seen having dinner together and enjoying time away from the spotlight.

A source at upmarket eatery Katsuya in Los Angeles claimed Cheryl and Derek – who dances in her latest single ‘Parachute’ – seem to be getting on very well.

They said: ‘Hough had his arm around Cheryl’s back for most of the dinner. She often touched his arm in a very flirtatious manner and he did the same to her.’

Coco Rocha’s weight defence

Coco RochaCoco Rocha has hit back at claims she’s ‘too fat for the runway’.

The model – who is a US size 4 – was furious with reports saying she wasn’t slim enough to grace the catwalk and says it’s disgusting how young girls in the industry are treated.

The 21-year-old beauty wrote on her blog: ‘I’m a 21 year old model, 6 inches taller and 10 sizes smaller than the average American woman. Yet in another parallel universe I’m considered ‘fat’… This was the subject of major discussion this week and the story that was spun was: ‘Coco Rocha is too fat for the runway.’

‘Is that the case? No. I am still used and in demand as a model. In fact I find myself busier than ever. In the past few years I have not gained an extreme amount of weight, only an inch here and there as any young woman coming out of her teenage years would.’

Instead, she believes the modelling world should focus on the positives about a girl’s appearance otherwise there could be huge health implications.

She said: ‘Surely, we all see how morally wrong it is for an adult to convince an already thin 15 year old that she is actually too fat. It is unforgivable that an adult should demand that the girl unnaturally lose the weight vital to keep her body functioning properly. How can any person justify an aesthetic that reduces a woman or child to an emaciated skeleton? Is it art? Surely fashion’s aesthetic should enhance and beautify the human form, not destroy it.’
