Vivienne Westwood’s shopping plea

Dame Vivienne Westwood wants people to stop shopping.
The eccentric British designer, famed for her bright orange hair and colourful clothing, believes people should refrain from buying clothes to avoid over-consumption.
She said: ‘I just tell people, stop buying clothes. Why not protect this gift of life while we have it?
‘I don’t take the attitude that destruction is inevitable. Some of us would like to stop that and help people survive.’
The 68-year-old fashionista often uses her catwalk collections to make a statement – in 2005 she launched a range of T-shirts and baby clothes emblazoned with the phrase ‘I AM NOT A TERRORIST, please don’t arrest me’.
Despite many people suggesting she cannot work in fashion and be against consumerism, Vivienne has claimed in the past it is a subject that sits difficultly for her.
She said: ‘I don’t feel very comfortable defending my fashion except to say that people don’t have to buy it. But if you’ve got the money to afford them, then buy something from me. Just don’t buy too much.’
